Bilingual children during Hispanic Heritage Month activities

National Parents often do not even know the meaning or reason for National Hispanic Heritage Month. It 'was held for 39 years, from September 17, 2007. Law promulgated in this day in 1968 the United States to cancel a week for citizens to honor our Spanish-speaking world. Later the 100th Congress passed a law that increases public celebration of a period of 31 days. This year, National Hispanic Heritage Month runs from 15 September 2007-15 October.

TheInitiative for the National Hispanic Heritage Month is a recognition for the more than 44.3 million Americans of Latin American origin, over 15% of our population. The 31-day observation period honors Independence Day for many Latin American countries like El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Honduras and September 15 to celebrate their independence day. September 16th is Independence Day for Mexico, September 18 in Chile, September 21st for Belize and ElDia de la Raza (Columbus Day) October 12.

The Spanish language is an integral part of family life, and 32.2 million families speak Spanish at home. We find Texas leads the nation with 29% of residents speak Spanish at home. Twenty states now that their relationship is the largest minority Hispanic Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Nebraska, Nevada, NH, NJ, New MexicoOregon, Rhode Island, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Washington and Wyoming.

Why is it important to know and impart to your children? For the truth is, we live in a global society a lot and it is our responsibility as parents and as educators to foster appreciation and understanding of other cultures and languages to bring into the lives of our children.

National Hispanic Heritage Month is the perfect opportunity to introduce children to language and culture that surrounds themevery day in their homes, nursery school, kindergarten and elementary school setting. Research shows that children who learn a second language before they master them, are better readers, and brings them on the road to academic success.
